15. Everen: Lockpick
Summary
- The character begins his education under the guidance of the other character in a lock shop.
- The student initially finds the lessons frustrating due to the difference in status, the student usually being in a superior role, and feels humiliated.
- Both characters establish a routine but continue to have troubles adjusting.
- The teaching character pays for their shared meals, promising to keep a tab for the student to eventually pay him back. Despite being somewhat of a break from lessons, the outings continue to serve as a teaching moment related to class and status.
- The student is intrigued by yet uninformed about a large job that is brought up more than once, which causes a bit of friction between the two characters.
- The student begins taking active steps in establishing a routine, studying, and adjusting to his new life, even gaining approval and surprise from the teacher.
- The student begins to find satisfaction in the task of lock picking, and soon assumes a greater sense of independence in his studies.
- The teaching character begins to show signs of respect and camaraderie for the student although this is met with suspicion by the student.
- While the student does make progress in lessons, there are still many challenges with human magic that he faces, but he is determined to glean information helpful to Cassia, his dragon ally.
- The teacher and student’s bond causes the teacher to be able to use magic without a seal. This angers the student as he feels that his magic has been stolen.
- At the end of the chapter, the teacher leaves the student in the lock shop with more questions than answers.
