32. Everen: Entangled
Summary
- The chapter begins with a dream-like sequence showing the protagonist, Everen, trapped in a storm and entangled by a silver disc.
- The scene then shifts, and a character named Miligrist appears. She is introduced as having raised Everen, and while distant and cryptic, loved him deeply. Miligrist speaks in a sad tone, warning Everen about the heartaches to come and recognizing his persistent but futile attempts to defy his destiny.
- Just before the dream ends, Everen is attacked by a dragon in the fog, but the attack is interrupted before reaching him.
- Everen wakes up remembering where he is and what has happened. He checks his injuries, which seem fine except for a severe wing injury. His magic has restored slightly, which helps him assume a human form much to the relief of his companion.
- The duo then treks towards a coastal road intending to reach the city, Vatra. During the journey, Everen hunts and they share a quiet meal. This momentary peace is interrupted when the companion questions Everen about the nature of “the bond”. This provokes a discussion about the bond and its significance.
- Everen admits he does not know how to break the bond, but mentions its completion would improve their magical abilities and enable him to reassume his true form. He, however, keeps hidden that the bond could be broken by killing the companion.
- Despite the peaceful moments, Everen is plagued by the realization of the upcoming wars and potential death of thousands, including his companion. The chapter concludes with the duo reaching the city and deciding to part ways temporarily with Everen being trusted with a shop key.
