Chapter Eighteen: Hana. Pinwheel Paths. The Horror in the Pool. The Sundial at Last. An Unwelcome Encounter.
Summary
- The chapter opens with the protagonist spying on Hana, a giantess, sitting on a golden throne. He watches as she sings, preventing her from noticing his dog, Radar, coughing.
- Hana leaves, having not noticed the protagonist and Radar, giving them the time to move closer to the palace.
- As they approach the palace, they encounter a pool hiding the remnants of a mermaid. The destruction of such mystic beauty seems to be the symbol of the evil curse which has fallen on this land.
- Upon reaching a sundial, the protagonist places Radar on one of the dials, and begins to turn the dial counter-clockwise.
- With each turn, Radar seems to regain her strength, turning back the time on her age and sickness. By the fifth turn though, the sundial is spinning too fast, and the protagonist fears for what it might do to Radar.
- Radar, invigorated by the treatment, jumps off the sundial back into the protagonist's arms, looking healthier than she has for a long time.
- They prepare to leave, not wanting to tempt fate further, but are unsure where Hana is or what she's doing, increasing their caution as they try to make their escape.
- The character is in a dangerous situation, hiding from Hana, a threatening presence, inside a haunted city called Lilimar. The character considers shooting Hana, but doesn't have to as Hana walks past and doesn't notice them.
- The character waits to escape, hoping Hana will fall asleep first. They want to escape the city by dark.
- Eventually, they try to retrace their steps through the city, but struggle as the chalk marks guiding them seemed to have disappeared.
- They encounter Peterkin, who is seemingly antagonizing them and reveals that he intentionally wiped out their guides out of the city. Peterkin escapes, leaving the character and their dog Radar lost in the city.
- The character and Radar continue their attempts to navigate out of the city. Despite their challenges, the character remains hopeful for a second chance to catch Peterkin.
