Chapter Seven: First Night. Now You Know Jack. A Simple Woodcutter. Therapy. My Father’s Visit. Lynparza. Mr. Bowditch Makes a Promise.
Summary
- The chapter begins with Charlie and Mr. Bowditch (also known as Howard) in the latter's house, discussing things such as TV tubes, the gold Charlie had carried, and snail mail. They proceed with their usual routine.
- Charlie helps Howard take his pills and assists with Radar, Howard’s dog. A routine starts to develop for them.
- Charlie, who stays in Howard's house, starts reading about “Jack and the Beanstalk.” He correlates the story with his experience of carrying Howard’s gold.
- Around midnight, Charlie wakes up to give Howard his pain medication. Despite the medication, Howard has a hard time sleeping due to his pain.
- A physical therapist, Melissa, visits Howard regularly to help him stretch and lift his injured leg. Howard dislikes the painful process but continues with the therapy. Melissa suggests that Howard will recover, at least for a while. This ambiguous statement leaves Charlie confused and worried.
- Charlie's father, George, comes to visit Howard. Howard maintains a pleasant demeanor during the visit. After his father leaves, Charlie confronts Howard about a medication named "Lynparza" which he found during his research. He asks Howard why he doesn’t take more aggressive treatments for his cancer. Howard explains that he doesn't want more pain or suffer side effects of aggressive treatments.
- Charlie and Howard then talk about Charlie returning to school. Howard is worried that Charlie staying with him is causing too much separation from his father. He proposes to keep his midday and midnight pills to himself so Charlie can go back home.
- The chapter ends with Charlie showing Howard how to access stored films and programs in his laptop. Charlie also leaves a little dish with Howard's pills beside his bed, hoping Howard will keep his promise of not consuming more than what's needed. Charlie finally leaves Howard's house and goes home.
