Chapter 2
Overview
Waiting in Mr. Snow’s office after discovering Charles Black’s body, Molly rewinds her morning. She witnessed Charles storm from Suite 401 as Giselle hid in distress, then noticed two one-way Cayman tickets, an open safe with cash and one passport, and no tip. Meanwhile, hotel dynamics surface: Molly aids Juan Manuel, shares a moment with Rodney, and fends off Cheryl’s opportunism. These details heighten tensions around the Blacks and seed motives, escape plans, and financial strain.
Summary
Still waiting in Mr. Snow’s office and anxious about falling behind, Molly decides to retrace her morning to steady herself. She recalls entering through the grand front doors, exchanging kind words with doorman Mr. Preston, and then heading to the housekeeping quarters to restock her poorly maintained trolley, reflecting on her disdain for Cheryl Green’s corner-cutting.
Molly greets fellow maids Sunshine and Sunitha, then visits the kitchen to see Juan Manuel. She secretly provides him a keycard to an early-checkout room for safe overnight shelter, notices round red marks on his wrist that he calls burns, and changes the subject when he grows uncomfortable. She proceeds to the hotel bar, where Rodney gives her newspapers and points out a headline about the Black family feud involving daughter Victoria’s shares. Rodney thanks Molly for helping Juan Manuel, briefly touching her wrist, leaving Molly hopeful yet uncertain.
Taking the elevator to the fourth floor, Molly reaches Suite 401 just as Charles Black storms out, a document marked “DEED” protruding from his pocket. Inside, Giselle, disheveled and withdrawn, shuts herself in the bathroom with the shower and loud fan on. While Giselle avoids conversation, Molly tidies the suite: she sees Giselle’s open purse with an itinerary for two one-way flights to the Cayman Islands, vacuums the paced-up carpet, and in the bedroom notices the safe left open with legal documents, several stacks of new $100 bills, and only one passport visible.
Disturbed by her own financial temptations and Giselle’s unusual silence, Molly restocks the minibar and empties trash. After the shower stops, she offers tissues to a tearful Giselle, who refuses help and asks Molly not to clean the bathroom. Molly agrees and leaves to continue her rounds, unsettled by the lack of a tip and Giselle’s behavior.
In nearby rooms, Molly rebuffs Cheryl’s attempt to insert herself—likely to skim tips—before cleaning the Chens’ suite, where she finds a $20 gratuity. She notes Cheryl’s ongoing opportunism and, still worried about Giselle’s distress and the telltale signs of flight and money, returns to her present vigil in Mr. Snow’s office.
