Chapter 4
Overview
Molly gives her police statement, carefully revealing only that the bedside pills belong to Giselle while concealing other observations. Through flashbacks, Molly recalls her deepening friendship with Giselle, signs of Charles’s control, infidelity, and possible abuse, and receiving a Cayman-sand hourglass. The interview ends without raising alarms, positioning Molly as a protective but compromised witness and Giselle as potentially vulnerable.
Summary
Molly sits for a recorded interview at the police station with Detective Stark. Uneasy in the grimy room, she endures small talk, is offered water instead of tea, and is told she may be in shock. Molly stays polite but guarded, eager to go home.
When asked what she observed in Suite 401, Molly reports only the pills on the bedside table. Intentionally, she withholds other observations—an open safe, missing money, a robe on the floor, the flight itinerary, and Giselle’s purse being gone upon her later return—because she wants to protect Giselle. Pressed on the pills, Molly identifies them as Giselle’s based on her routine of organizing Giselle’s toiletries and prior sightings of Giselle taking them.
Molly then recounts the sequence of discovery: she announced herself, found the sitting room untidy, entered the bedroom, found Charles unresponsive, checked for breath and pulse, and called Reception. She tells Stark she barely knew Charles, who drank heavily and was aloof.
Stark asks about Giselle, prompting Molly’s memories: their first meeting, Giselle’s unusual warmth, a generous $100 tip, errands to evade the paparazzi, and lessons in social cues. Molly recalls Charles’s rudeness, Giselle’s protection of her, a makeover session, and Giselle’s complaints about Charles’s jealousy and multiple mistresses. Molly notices bruises on Giselle, urges her to leave, and receives a treasured hourglass filled with Cayman sand—a symbol of time and resolve. Giselle also rebuffs Molly’s supervisor, Cheryl, in defense of Molly’s work.
Back in the interview room, Stark repeats her question. Molly deflects, claiming no one confides in a maid. Satisfied, Stark ends the interview and drives Molly home, leaving Molly’s loyalty to Giselle intact—and her omissions unchallenged.
