Summary

• In the past, the protagonist used to double check with Emmy to ensure she was telling the truth about her whereabouts. They shared a close relationship as roommates in Boston.
• The protagonist is a journalist who's good at making people talk and she has a story about the lack of mental health services on a college campus. Further reflecting the tragic suicide cases she was supposed to cover, she recalls her experiences interviewing affected students.
• The protagonist gets into trouble over a controversial story she wrote. Her boss accuses her of defamation, which throws her career into jeopardy.
• The protagonist is all alone the next morning and is worried about Emmy's sudden disappearance. She searches for any sign of her though there's no trace of her.
• The protagonist is approached at school by Detective Kyle Donovan who tells her that the prime suspect, Davis Cobb, was not charged due to lack of evidence. The detective assures her of safety measures, yet the protagonist is left worried.
• The protagonist keeps checking her phone for a call from Emmy but there's nothing. In class, she assigns an exercise for her students to write an opinion piece about school safety, in hopes to gather information. She believes that as long as the truth is revealed in the end, everything is justified.
