Chapter 16
Summary
- The protagonist wakes up with Kyle in her bed but lets him sleep while she takes a shower. She notices an oddity - a light is on, that she didn't left on and wonders if Kyle had turned it on during the night.
- After she showered, Kyle had woken up and was eating cereal. He told her that he was on duty later and needed to head back. The protagonist offers to drive him back to his place.
- Upon dropping Kyle off, the protagonist discovers a rolled-up newspaper waiting for her at home, a newspaper she used to work for but left after a controversial story was published.
- The date on the paper is April 23, the last story she'd printed. It was about the suicides of four local college girls, including Bridget LaCosta, a girl who she believes was murdered.
- She suspects her cowardly former colleague Davis or her former roommate Paige may have left it on her doorstep. Nonetheless, she's aware she cannot let herself become paranoid or assume things.
- The protagonist reveals that her last story accused a college professor, Aaron Hampton, of giving Bridget the pills she overdosed on. The story claimed she had an anonymous source but her boss Logan didn't believe her and fired her because of it.
