Chapter 22
Summary
- The narrator, Leah, begins the chapter in school where she begins to investigate her colleagues, Davis Cobb and Theo Burton, for any suspicious behavior. She looks at the location of their homes and contemplates if they could be secretly visiting her home.
- She finds a sketch of a lake by Theo Burton and begins to wonder if he could have witnessed an altercation involving another colleague, Bethany Jarvitz. Leah calls another colleague, Kyle, to inquire about a tip he received implicating Davis Cobb in Bethany's attack, but he is evasive and promises to visit her later to discuss.
- After school, Leah visits a hardware store and buys a pair of bolt cutters and a new lock. When she returns home, she breaks into a locked area under her porch using the bolt cutters.
- Inside the hidden area, she discovers a box with the name "Emmy" written on it. It contains various mementos and two photographs. One photo shows a woman who Leah believes is Emmy's mother, the other is an old photo of a young Bethany Jarvitz.
- Learning that Emmy, her friend and supposed trusty guide, was once connected to Bethany comes as a shock to Leah. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger, with Leah questioning whether her move to this town was as random as she thought, or if Emmy had planned it with a hidden agenda.
