Chapter 4
Summary
- The chapter starts with the protagonist, Leah Stevens, recounting her experiences with Davis Cobb, a man who owns a laundromat and coaches basketball at the school.
- Leah began ignoring calls from Davis after 11PM, assuming they were drunk calls after leaving the bar. Davis was known to leave uncomfortable, creepy messages for Leah.
- Davis had an apparent interest in Leah, even showing up drunk at her door one night. Leah managed to reject his advances and ensured he leaves. Emmy, Leah's roommate, was in the house during the incident.
- Leah is pulled aside at work to be questioned about Davis, who has been arrested for assault. In particular, the investigators ask her about his repeated late-night phone calls. Leah confirms that Davis had been calling, but always left her voicemails that she would later delete.
- The detectives reveal that the victim of Davis's assault, Bethany Jarvitz, was found less than a mile from Leah's home and that she bore a physical resemblance to Leah, suggesting that Davis may have been stalking Leah.
- The investigators ask Leah to give a statement that could help their case and ensure others' safety. Leah, however, declines to be involved, wanting to protect her new start and keep her name out of the press.
- Even though Leah tries to navigate through the situation discreetly, her students at school, when she finally gets back to class, ask her why she was questioned about Coach Cobb. Leah realizes that she can't avoid the situation entirely and will have to face it head-on.
