Chapter 31
Summary
- The chapter begins with the narrator, Leah, home alone and troubled. Unable to figure out her next steps, she calls Kyle.
- Leah tells Kyle that she now doesn't think it was Davis Cobb who sent her the frightening emails, but one of her students named Theo Burton. She provides Kyle with chilling evidence from Theo's journal, suggesting he is stalking her.
- Kyle is taken aback as Theo is a minor, making the situation legally complicated. He questions Leah's certainty about this revelation as she was previously convinced it was Davis. Nonetheless, the two acknowledge this changes their investigation.
- Leah later receives an unexpected nighttime visit from Kyle who is clearly upset. He reveals that his personal involvement in a previous case led to its dismissal and subsequently prompted his move to this town for a fresh start.
- Leah shares her belief that her missing friend Emmy somehow knew the victim, Bethany, but refuses to show Kyle the evidence she possesses in fear it may be used against her.
- Leah contemplates whether her other friend, Paige, would vouch for Emmy's existence if it got to the point of Leah being arrested.
- The tension between Kyle and Leah grows, with each unsure if the other is playing them. Kyle worries Leah will ruin his case and potentially his career, but then he abruptly kisses her, leading to an intimate moment.
