Chapter 38
Summary
- The chapter begins when the protagonist encounters Emmy, who the protagonist now understands to be a manipulative, deceptive individual. The protagonist is able to see Emmy's varying personas and realizes that Emmy is not the person she thought she was.
- During their interaction, Emmy pretends to be surprised to see the protagonist, acting as though everything was still a joke. However, the protagonist sees through Emmy's act and recognizes her desperation.
- Emmy tries to justify her actions by claiming that she did it for the protagonist, alluding to the murder of James Finley, which she pins on an accomplice named Bethany Jarvitz. Emmy falsely presents herself as the protagonist's protector.
- The protagonist, however, disbelieves Emmy's narrative and accuses her of using multiple identities to covet and steal money and evade the law. Moreover, the protagonist asserts Emmy's involvement in the murder of James Finley and accuses Emmy of setting her up as an accomplice.
- The protagonist rejects Emmy's pleas for understanding and forgiveness, confronting her with an evidence that pins her down to the crime scene and announcing that she has informed her boyfriend, a police detective, of Emmy's whereabouts.
- Emmy's false composure breaks, she flees the scene without any of her belongings. The protagonist knows that she won't escape, this time, from the incoming police.
- The chapter ends with the protagonist reflecting on her actions, admitting that she took a risk by confronting Emmy alone. However, she believes she needed to face Emmy in order to confront the emotions tied to her past and to show Emmy that she isn't the weak person Emmy assumed her to be.
