Chapter 8
Summary
- The chapter begins with Officer Calvin Dodge questioning the protagonist in her home regarding the disappearance of her roommate, Emmy Grey.
- The protagonist shares she has been receiving strange calls and once found the light turned on in her living room unexpectedly. She also mentions finding Emmy's necklace, which she never takes off, in the backyard.
- Kyle Donovan arrives at the scene and Officer Dodge shares all the information he has gathered. Kyle takes over the questioning and the protagonist reveals to him that Emmy might be in danger.
- The protagonist admits she does not have detailed knowledge of Emmy's life, such as her workplace or family history. However, she emphasizes that she knows Emmy well.
- Kyle asks the protagonist about Emmy's phone, email, social media accounts, car, and previous residences. The protagonist provides limited responses, stating that Emmy lived a transient life.
- It is revealed that Emmy broke off an engagement with a financé in Boston and, subsequently, abandoned her former cell phone and lifestyle.
- When asked for pictures of Emmy, the protagonist admits she does not have any. She does share, however, that Emmy had a boyfriend named Jim who lived nearby.
- Kyle suggests that the protagonist retrieve her home phone records to locate Jim, which she agrees to do.
- Finally, Kyle asks about Davis Cobb, presumably a person of interest. The protagonist discloses that she has received emails from an account bearing Cobb's name. Although disconcerting, she deems the correspondence as harmless.
- Kyle advises her to stop deleting these emails and indicates that he will look into it further.
