Chapter 25
Summary
- The police have finished searching Leah's house, but have bagged up some items as evidence, including some of Leah's personal documents.
- They are trying to link the evidence to a woman named Emmy, who they believe had connections to a man named James Finley, but they can't find any connection of her to Leah's house or even to a motel where she supposedly worked.
- Kyle, the police officer, asks Leah to help sift through the receipts they found in her house and identify which belong to Emmy.
- Leah cooperates but is concerned that the police are suspicious of her.
- Leah is aware that people crave a comprehensive story and she's the only one who can provide the desired closure. However, she begins to doubt if Kyle is genuine or if she's being manipulated.
- She is then joined by Calvin Dodge, another police officer, to sift through the receipts.
- While taking a break, Leah asks Dodge about the case. He explains that it is all speculation at this point, and they're simply investigating potentials leads.
- Leah realizes they have not taken any of Emmy's possessions for DNA testing, leading her to think the police may not believe Emmy is real. There seems to be three theories in this case but the final one posits that Emmy Grey, the supposed victim, may not exist at all.
- Despite this, Leah points out several receipts that could potentially belong to Emmy, hoping that it would help to find out the truth about her existence.
