Chapter 35
Summary
- The chapter starts with the main character, perhaps a woman named Leah, hiding behind a stack of garbage bins, fearing she'll be seen by another woman named Paige. Paige spots her and threatens to call the police.
- Leah has to confront Paige and notes how much Paige had physically changed over the years. She had aged considerably, possibly due to the stress of motherhood and from losing her husband.
- There is tension between the two, as Paige accuses Leah of writing lies about her husband and causing his suicide. Leah argues the published information was actually true.
- Leah asks for Paige's help in finding someone named Emmy, who is somehow related to an incident involving Paige and her boyfriend. Paige recalls the incident with shock and disbelief, causing Leah to feel relief that Paige did in fact remember Emmy.
- Leah wants Paige to cooperate with the police about Emmy. Paige is resistant, still angry about the allegations Leah made about her deceased husband.
- While they are talking, Paige gets distracted by the sound from a baby monitor radio which signifies her baby is awake. Paige leaves Leah to attend to her baby. Leah is left wondering about the circumstances surrounding Paige's husband's death and Paige's potential involvement.
- As Leah contemplates Paige's behavior and choices, she questions her own understanding of the people in her life – Noah, Rebecca, Aaron, and even Paige.
