Chapter 37
Summary
- Chapter 37 starts with the police arriving to take Theo Burton away from school, as the protagonist had given his stalker's journal entries, drawings and an untraceable phone number to the police, getting him into the system.
- Later, Kyle and the protagonist talk about their broken relationship with Emmy, whom they now consider as a dangerous person, even though some part of the protagonist still struggles to believe it.
- The protagonist observes that Emmy was living a life on the run since she made a mistake and involved Bethany in events leading to a house being burned down, perhaps with someone in it. Emmy was always planning to set the protagonist up as a suspect.
- As the season changes, the protagonist can't shake off a feeling that Emmy is still somewhere out there, possibly checking on her. She can't trust her feelings, but is also unable to forget Emmy.
- Eventually, the protagonist locates Emmy's real name, Melissa Kellerman, and her possible whereabouts from family records. She finds a house owned by Emmy's late mother, Andrea Kellerman, and decides that she needs to confront her for a closure.
- When the protagonist arrives at Emmy's house, she finds it empty, but with signs of recent inhabitance. Upon entering, she recognizes the scent of vanilla and starts reminiscing about their past together.
- As a car pulls up in the driveway, the protagonist remains hidden inside the house, unsure of what to do next. The car's driver turns out to be Emmy, who hasn't seemed to notice that someone had broken into her house.
- The protagonist captures a photo of Emmy from inside the house before Emmy realizes that she’s not alone.
