Chapter 10
Summary
- In this chapter, Gabe and Sylvia Ashe are continuing their investigation into the theft of a valuable book from the Glass Library. They visit Lady Stanhope again, and Gabe questions her alibi for the night of the theft.
- Lady Stanhope appears offended by their suspicions and proclaims her innocence. Her chauffeur confirms that she attended a ball and arrived home late, suggesting she had no opportunity to steal the book from the Glass Library.
- Next, Gabe and Sylvia visit Francis Stray, a mathematician who had previously assisted with investigating the book's code. Stray reveals that Gabe has attracted the attention of his former commanding officer in Military Intelligence, due to his apparent ability to defy probability.
- After investigating Lady Stanhope and Stray without success, Gabe and Sylvia then visit Madge Dowd, a woman who had carried a bag the same size as the stolen book the night before. She's an aspiring actress who got her picture taken by Carl Trevelyan, the man they had visited previously at his studio.
- Madge denies knowledge of the stolen book, and it's suggested that she and other young actresses are being helped by Trevelyan, who takes their pictures to help them get recognised without taking unfair advantage of them.
