Chapter 15

Summary

• The protagonists, Gabe and Sylvia, visit a bookstore in an attempt to track down a missing antique book, the Medici Manuscript.
• They find out from the shop owner, Mr. Barstow, that a man claiming to be John Smith offered to sell him a book with a matching description. The offer was made through a letter, and the return address is in St. Giles.
• In the bookstore, Sylvia and Gabe find an envelope meant for John Smith with Mr. Barstow's response to the offer to buy the book.
• The protagonists then visit Mr. Trevelyan, a photographer, with suspicion he may be involved in the theft. They find explicit photographs in his studio, but no sign of the missing book. They find nothing incriminating in his flat, either.
• They then deduce that another suspect, Huon Barratt, might also be involved since he frequents the area of the vacant shop where John Smith's mail is sent. The next step is to question Barratt.
