Part 7 — Chapter 4
Summary
- The chapter begins with two gunshots followed by sounds of a man running away.
- Gaspery finds himself under an overpass, drowsy from an unidentified substance he had been sprayed with. He smells car exhaust and feels cold.
- A character named Ephrem apologizes to Gaspery before taking away his device and replacing it with a gun.
- The man who was running, presumably the gunman, disappears. Ephrement also leaves, leaving Gaspery alone.
- Gaspery hears a groan and sees two men lying nearby in pools of their own blood. One of the men, who looks confused and scared, passes away as Gaspery watches.
- Gaspery figures out that he has been framed for the murder of the men, which is inferred from his memory of someone named Zoey mentioning getting lost in time and prisoners being sent elsewhere.
- Gaspery senses movement and sees two young girls standing a distance away, staring. They seem to be returning home from school.
- As police sirens approach, Gaspery lets the gun fall from his hand. He recognizes one of the girls as Mirella.
