Part 6 — Chapter 4
Summary
- The chapter begins with the character Gaspery returning to the Time Institute, sub-basement of Travel Room Eight where Zoey is on the control desk.
- He tells Zoey that he had an encounter with the anomaly, which she already knew about from a prior message.
- Zoey informs him that Ephrem, another character, is decommissioning him due to this, and indicates that this spells bad news for Gaspery.
- Despite the negative connotations of decommissioning, Gaspery is still hopeful and believes that if he finishes his investigation, it might save him.
- He requests Zoey to confirm two more destinations for him using his device; these are for the year 1918 and the year 2007.
- The year 1918 is chosen because he has follow-up questions for Edwin St. Andrew, who experienced the anomaly in 1912. The year 2007 is chosen because he wants to attend a party that a character named Vincent Smith will be at.
- Zoey is concerned about his decision because his device and tracker are no longer functioning. Despite her fear of the implications of assisting him, she helps Gaspery by overriding the decommissioning order.
- She advises him that Ephrem will soon arrive, likely with security forces, and she would be unable to give him protection if he returns.
- Gaspery acknowledges and appreciates her help, and hears a knock on the door as he leaves the room.
